Fashion shows, just like Broadway shows, are about drama and showmanship. The best approach is to adapt one trend that most appeals you and not to go to ridiculous extremes reinventing yourself every season.
If the trend is red lips (and you really love red lipstick), go for it. The toned-down version is a brown-toned lipstick that has red in it. Or find a sheer red stain or use a red lip pencil with your everyday lip color.
If the trend is black lips, the real-life option is rich matte blackberry, plum, or burgundy mixed with your favorite pink or rose lipstick.
If the trend is no makeup, be realistic. If wearing no makeup leaves you looking washed-out, do a light application instead. Keep it natural and be sure to use soft shades that warm your face and make you look pretty. Models who look like they are wearing nothing are probably wearing at least concealer, foundation, and light mascara.
If the trend is frost, put it in select spots; use shimmer on nails, eyelids, or lips. Not everywhere.
